What's your favorite afternoon snack?
i got suckered into buying these because i had a $1.25 off coupon. honestly, they're so good -- better than salty rice snacks. we initially prepared to brace ourselves for tasteless styrofoam discs but the mini delights are crispy discs of sweetness. so far we've had caramel and i can't wait to try the chocolate. while i can eat two packs, one pack helps satisify my craving for a sweet afternoon snack.
The National Bureau of Economic Research declared on Monday that the U.S. has been in a recession since December 2007. Now that it's "official," does that change how you will spend or save?
nope, this does not change the way i save or spend. why should it? the only factors which changes my money habits:
- changes in our employment (whether lay off, pending lay off, new job, etc)
- changes in our salaries (i've noticed we've been spending a little more since my new job)
What have you cut back on to save money this year?
- going from two cars to one car=less maintenance, insurance, and gasoline expenses
- buying reusable water bottles =the less water i need to buy in bulk from costco
- found a inexpensive yet quality hair stylist. the envrionment is absolutely no frills. while the salon isn't equipped with ambient lighting, soft music, beverages, and girly magazines, my guy cuts hair well (even better!) for a fraction of the cost at american hair salons
- did not go to disneyland at all this year. we were busy on the weekends hence we didn't have time to visit mickey and friends
when i wasn't sure if i was going survive layoff's earlier this year, then i did the following for those few nerve racking months:
- did not buy any spa services (oh, i wanted to get a massage so badly when my other gf's went)
- did not buy new clothes and shoes
- performed audits of what i spent at target (the worst place to save money) to make sure i didn't buy any unnecessary items
it looks like all of what we "saved" during the year will go to:
- a car. it was nice while it lasted but my current workplace is no longer within walking distance of home
- washer and dryer. our dryer is so inefficent drying clothes; it takes TWO cycles to get completely dried clothes
- flat screen tv. the husband wants one and after living with the bulky tv for 5+ years, he deserves it. my parents' tv is starting to flicker so it's a good excuse to give them our current tv
i challenge my vox neighbors to answer this question of the week! i read the groanings (and excitement) about their "must have" purchases from them. i want to see how they're saving money; not just spending it!
What do you do EVERY day to take care of the earth's environment? What could you do more of?
daily:
what do i do to take care of earth's environment:
- walk to work
- use a real bowl and spoon to eat my oatmeal (it's such a pain in the butt to wash after)
- drop off all of my scratch paper into the recyling bin at the office
- place my can or bottle into the recycling bin
what i could do more of:
- walk back to work from lunch rather than drive back
- drink less bottled water; damn the convenience factor! i do use the same bottle to refill throughout the day. i am tempted to get a sigg bottle now.
- use something biogradable to store animal poop. any suggestions, cat/dog owners? i use plastic bags from the produce section of the market. i also reuse previously used produce bags when available
throughout the year:
what do i do to take care of earth's environment:
- recycle all reuseable boxes and packing materials from shipments to use for our own shipments; i.e. ms. jaycine sent me an envelope. i removed the address labels and reused the envelope to ship off greeting cards i sold
- take a reusable bag to the store; any store. i have a macy's reuseable bag for clothes shopping; always get compliments from the sales ladies when they ring me up
- minimize appliances plugged into the electric outlets to reduce phantom load
- take the mass transit when possible
- our household uses 85% compact fluorscent lights
- take junk mail, dead batteries, expired medicine, old make up, and old electronics to a hazardous waste event
- opt out of everything possible; i can't stand preapproved credit card applications!
- give away clothing and other items to goodwill
- give away old books and magazines to the library
- sign up for paperless statements for all of my bills and utilities
- sign up for green power with our power company; basically our energy is derived from renewable sources such as wind and solar
what i could do more of:
- visit the farmer's market to support local merchants
- turn off the tv or computer to conserve energy
- drive a more fuel efficient car
- use earth friendly cleaning products
List three things you'd buy with your last $20. One practical, one frivolous and one of your choosing.
i'm a reef copycat today. :)
- practical: northern quilted toilet paper (we all need tp...i hope?)
- frivolous: origins peace of mind; the intense blast of peppermint and eucalyptus is relaxing and invigorating after a hot bath
- choosing: in 'n out double double combo; only because i'm hungry at this moment ;) it is lunch time!
What movie did you expect would be terrible, but was actually really good?
wallace and gromit in the curse of the were-rabbit. i never watched wallace and gromit and i have never been a fan of british humor. when aaron suggested to watch them, i was iffy. it was actually quite cute and entertaining -- my favorite is gromit and his expressive eyes.
How are you celebrating Halloween today?
go to target or costco; bound to be empty today because everyone will be out trick or treating!
What are the 5 words that best describe your life right now?

stable
boring
fulfilling
wonderful
fleeting (being at a fork in the road with the kid thing looming over us)
What item(s) do you have to prevent yourself from buying at the grocery store?
Submitted by Places Unknown.
- good quality ice cream; i tried costco "premium" ice cream samples and they gave me a headache. :P
- cheetos and ruffles; i eat other types of chips
- chocolate
- any type of baked goods from the bakery
- any type of fried foods from the deli
- anything basically bad for you
since dream dinners, we don't go to the supermarket much anymore. the last time we were at the market was when we recycled cans and bottles for cat food. we usually go to the market if we can't get an item at target or if target is closed (our target has a expanded food section and it's much cheaper).
If you could eat anything you wanted, and not have to worry about gaining weight/being unhealthy/inhumane, what would you totally pig out on?
Submitted by Jay.
ohhh, hohoho. (rubs hands) some of my best dreams revolved around eating. the last dream i had: eating ice cream on a date. all the pleasure, none of the weight gain.
- cheese puffs (not cheetos but cheese puffs)
- fosselman ice cream
- in 'n out cheeseburger
- fried chicken and waffles
- fried wontons
- most fried foods (i stop at innards and gentials)
- red velvet cake
- boston cream pie
- any dessert at the bellagio dessert bar
excuse me as my arteries are hardening up, just thinking about these goodies.
